In recent years, it seems as though San Diego is becoming more and more dog friendly. With dog friendly restaurants and hotels sprouting up all over, and a flurry of dog friendly events taking the city by storm, it seems as though San Diego is going to the dogs….literally. But as San Diego becomes more dog friendly, our beloved pets are being put into more and more compromising positions. When people meet strange dogs, at times they throw caution to the wind, automatically assuming the dog is friendly and desires their love and affection. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case and a well intentioned approach can easily be misconstrued as a threat to a dog, sending it into a tailspin of emotion and creating the potential for a scary situation. So what is the right way to greet a strange dog?

To Crate or Not to Crate

There is an ongoing debate these days as to whether crating dogs is a positive thing, or whether it’s a cruel means to confine a dog. Crating a dog is very much a personal decision each individual pet owner must make for themselves. However, crating training, if implemented properly, can be an excellent training tool for dogs of all ages.

Using Motivation in Dog Training

If you have read about dog training recently, you have likely heard the word “positive reinforcement”, the hottest trend in dog training techniques that is taking the world by storm. But what does “positive reinforcement” training really mean? In the world of dog learning theory, positive reinforcement falls under the umbrella of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a way for us to condition responses in our dogs using certain types of stimuli. For example, if I want my dog to “sit”, I can condition that response by rewarding the “sit” with a tasty treat. In essence, this is positive reinforcement. This term refers to us applying a pleasurable stimuli (i.e. affection, treats, a favorite toy) in order to condition a response to happen more frequently. If my dog gets something fabulous for sitting, he’s likely to want to sit for me more frequently when asked.

Housebreaking is one of the chief complaints our trainers receive from small dog owners. Many small dog owners opt for an indoor dog potty system to simplify the housebreaking process, only to end up with a dog that thinks the entire house is his toilet! So how do we teach dogs to use an indoor potty and prevent them from going elsewhere?
