Who would have thought that a Miller Lite commercial would have started such a doggone craze? Wiener Dog Races officially got their start after the airing of the commercial back in the early 90s. To refresh your memory here is the commercial that ignited the movement…

After seeing this commercial, many dachshund enthusiasts started hosting drag racing events for one reason and one reason only - to have FUN!!!! Pretty soon the fast-food chain Wienerschnitzel started sponsoring some races, and the events took off in popularity. Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals made its way to San Diego.

In case you missed it, the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals were held back in August on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium. 363 wiener dogs participated in the 13th annual event. All the dogs were racing for bragging rights as San Diego’s fastest dachshund – woof!

The sixteen fastest dogs that day then advanced to the semi-final race which was held on September 1st during an inning break of the Padres vs. Nationals game at Petco Park. The top eight dogs from that race advanced to the finals to be held on December 30th before the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union. Now that you are caught up to dachshund speed, make your plan to take in the BIG RACE!!
