nubs

When Maj. Brian Dennis of the United States Marine Corps met a wild stray dog while serving in Iraq, he had no idea of the bond they would form, leading to profound changes in both their lives.

Have you heard the story of Nubs?

The story reflects the incredible loyalty and companionship that dogs exude! A dog’s companionship burrows deep into the human soul and carves a permanent spot in our hearts – it’s a canine gift!

Nubs had made this kind of connection with Maj. Brian Dennis. The two met while Brian was patrolling along the Syrian border where Nubs lived with a pack of stray dogs. Brian would regularly patrol this area which was 70 miles from his base camp. Each time Brian patrolled that area he and Nubs would spend a day or two together and Brian would take care of Nubs. Nubs would even accompany the men on night patrols keeping everyone safe.

After the patrol duty was finished there was always a sad goodbye… Nubs did not like the goodbyes. Nubs would chase after the Humvee as it rumbled back to base camp. Nubs would keep up as long as he could until he tired and he would fall off into the dust back to other strays to wait for the next visit.

Only seeing Brain occasionally was not good enough for Nubs so one day Nubs began his amazing Journey. In 18 degree weather he made the 70 mile maiden voyage just to be next to Brian. Keep in mind Nubs had only ever followed Brian for a couple miles at most… how did he know where to go? When he stumbled into Brian’s base camp, Nubs was worn out, hungry and injured from the trek. Brian was shocked to see Nubs at the base camp.

Those 70 miles was the first step of even longer journey to a happy ending in San Diego
