Local Film Maker and SAR Beagles Creating Awareness

SAR Dogs are such a vital aspect of successful search and rescue operations but many “non-dog people” are not aware of this amazing canine component.  So a local filmmaker is putting search and rescue dogs in the spotlight.

The film, “Trackers - Every Life is Important”, highlights a local dog owner and her beagles.  Read more

Otay Ranch Town Center boasts doggie retreat

During the dog days of summer, pets no longer have to “ruff it” while their owners are away. Travelers can give their dogs a “special treat” at Otay Ranch Town Center’s 10,0000-square-foot fenced doggie park (located next to Macy’s at the open-air shopping venue).

Making special arrangements for the family pet can sometimes complicate travel plans. Otay Ranch Town Center understands how much people love their pets and how heartbreaking it is to leave them behind while traveling. Located in Chula Vista, Otay Ranch Town Center provides travelers with a pet playground making it convenient for pet-owners to travel with their four-legged friends. Opened in October 2006, Otay Ranch Town Center’s pet park has a pet-friendly setting and an adjacent doggie park with a centrally located chalk garden and popper fountain for children to make this destination especially one-of-a-kind.

Otay Ranch Town Center’s dog park is located at 2015 Birch Road, Chula Vista, California.

Fit Tip of the Week

Traveling with your dog

After getting back from a great road trip with my mom and dad, I thought I would share some information with you in case you are planning on doing any traveling with your furry friend!!  The following are 5 things that you need to know:

1/ Make sure your pet does not get car sick.  There is a difference between traveling around town and driving 8 hours.  Work them up to extended periods in the car.  There are soothing tapes, homeopathic sedatives, and toys that will help with this task.

2/ Do your research before hitting the road, many hotels do not allow pets.  Most of the large chains do but if you are traveling to a remote area–call ahead to make sure you will have somewhere to stay when you arrive.  There is usually a small fee that is added on to the room rate for your pet.

3/ Traveling with your pet has its benefits of course, but you will be limited as to what you can do.  Many stores and restaurants will not allow pets.  Depending on what time of the year you are traveling, leaving your pet in the car may not be an option.  Taking a crate with you may help if you want to leave fido in your hotel room–unless they get separation anxiety and start barking non-stop! That may present a problem!

4/ National Parks and most State parks do not allow pets on the trails.  Again, if you are planning on traveling to these areas you may want to make other arrangements if you are planning on doing any hiking.  You may want to check with the local towns to see if there are any boarding facilities so that fido will be safe.

5/ Take all of your dogs medication, food, a few toys and records with you.  Traveling is stressful enough on a dog, this is not a good time to change their food.  Hopefully nothing happens while on the vacation, but having their medical records with you can prevent any delays in case a trip to the emergency room is on your scenic route!

I go EVERYWHERE with my mom and dad but they were very limited as to where they could go on our recent trip to the Northwest.   They said that bringing me was worth it though!  Enjoy your travels but just know the “rules” on where you are headed!! To see our recent travels–just scroll down further on my blog, maybe you will get some ideas where to go!!

Thanks!

As dog fanatics we understand that we can tell a lot about what our dogs are feeling by the way their ears are positioned, in essence they are "giving us an ear full."

I do not know about you but my Bulldog, Dozer, is very picky about where he leaves his daily deposits.  I’m sure my non-dog neighbors find it very comical when they see me with poop bag in hand, chasing my 75 pound determined pooch in circles as he dissects the area as if he is on some sort of military maneuver to find the proverbial “ground zero”.  Even though VERY time consuming; I don’t mind his CSI type investigation of perfect soil.

So I attended the Canine Cocktail Hour at the Indigo Hotel expecting only to take a few photos, drink a beer (or two) meet some great people and their dogs before going home.  All of the above happened, but what I did not expect was meeting Spike and his relentless enthusiasm for life.  Spike is a 10 ½ year old male boxer.  Unfortunately his arthritis worsened, which threw a huge wrench into both his four legged life and Bruce’s future plans as well
